Okay, given that a lot of folks are coming over from twitter now, let me remind everyone of the important thing I learned: You can tag your posts generously. This ain't twitter. You can tag everything with theoretically almost as many tags as you like. And, importantly:
You can mute tags.
Just go onto your settings and go to "muted tags". You can mute stuff.
You do not wanna see someone's self-promotion posts? Mute "fanfiction". You do not want to see stuff for a certain ship? Mute the ship tag. You have certain triggers you do not want to see? Mute the trigger and ideally the tw tag "cw xy".
That is also why you ideally tag all your stuff. So that people can mute the stuff they don't wanna see.
Love the tagging system.
There's content blocking and tag blocking.
As the above states, if there's a subject you don't want to see on here, whether it's annoying discourse, a personal trigger, or even a piece of media you would rather not interact with, you can block the related tags. You can even block a blog's personalized tags, like '#rambling', '#personal', or '#ranting', or some other personalized tag, if a specific blog uses those tags and you're tired of seeing that brand of posts. This is the most precise method of blocking things you don't want to see, granted the people posting about it remember to tag appropriately.
Which is where content blocking comes in. Content blocking is much more aggressive and effects a broader spectrum of posts. With content blocking you can block a phrase or word and simply not see posts that contain that word. If there's a specific discourse you absolutely cannot stand seeing on your dash and no one's tagging it properly, just type in the commonly used phrases or words regarding that subject. This is a semi-drastic measure, because as stated it will block ALL posts using the identified words. If you type "the", it's likely 90% of the site will be unavailable to you.
Have fun curating your online experience!
You can also block specific blogs by name, this is tumblr so even if you block a blog it can still turn up in a comment chain, if you go into the content blocking and put their url in it. Posts they show up in will stop showing on your dash, just a grey box letting you know that post has that word or phrase in it.
me: i don’t want to see jellyfish so i will blacklist the tag #jellyfish
people with no common sense: je11yf1sh, je11¥fi5h, j*llyf*sh, je//ÿf!sh, j3ï||yf¡sh, gel lee fisk
result: cannot account for the sheer amount of possible ways to alter the word jellyfish
conclusion: i have to see jellyfish now.
Once again, tumblr is not tiktok, tag properly.
